"Oliver Canales Greenwood’s set design is simple but versatile: three flanking platforms present the gay couple’s bed at center (later Prior’s hospital bed), while on either side, two-person interactions occur, either in parallel or counterpoint. Greenwood also lights the show strikingly, from a colorful rear projection to numerous mood shifts –– like the moment Joe stands turned away, conflicted, his face half-shadowed."

OPERA COMMENTARY:

"And in many ways, it has. Senior Oliver Canales Greenwood, a theater production and design major, first became involved with opera in his sophomore year, when he was assistant scenic charge on “Le Dernier Sorcier.” For this year’s spring opera, “Acis and Galatea,” Canales Greenwood will be the leading designer.

“Since I found out that I was going to be the designer for this show … I started to research more into the history of opera,” Canales Greenwood said. “It’s a beautiful art form that spotlights vocal performance, and grandeur in design.” Canales Greenwood also commented on opera’s relationship with musical theater, and how it informed his perception of the performing arts.

“I think I appreciate opera because it was the preamble to musical theater,” Canales Greenwood said. “There’s an air of spectacle, whether in design or performance, but also an intensive emotional response.”

"Oliver Canales Greenwood’s set is open and minimal, with moveable old-style street lamps, suitcases, and trunks, the latter sometimes draped with tacky green plastic carpeting to evoke shrubbery. (Multiple scene changes become mini comic ballets, as ensemble members swan through, gaily shifting props.) The stage floor is a painted map of city streets, and the musical interludes..."
